Four F words that get you through the holiday season
Another new year approaching and the entire world feels the need and urge to give us advice on what to do and how to do it so we have a better year ahead of us.
Psychologists tell us how to deal with stress associated with holidays and being around family, relationship struggles, and the unrealistic expectation of being happy and joyful,
Economists teach us how to manage our gift shopping and the debts raised by it,
Nutritionists make sure we stay healthy and survive the “eating season”,
Businesses use all their tricks convincing us to stay on top trends and buy more, because the more the merrier,
and the rest of us competes finding deals on “never needed” gifts.
Since everyone out there is in the “advice giving” business, I take upon myself to share my voice too.
So here is “my 2¢”,
Flunk Resolutions:
- I know I should tell you set a resolution and stick to yet. But seriously? Resolutions are just another set-up-to-fail syndrome. Barely anyone succeeds on keeping the resolution long enough and that’s why there’s so many articles on this topic. So why don’t we stop making resolutions and create a system instead ? We do not need a new beginning or the New Year to plan and start anything, what we need in a system in which we adopt healthy behaviors, add them into our daily routines and constantly monitoring our success and failures. Healthy systems help us grow and improve everyday.
People who are self motivated and disciplined do not need a resolution every year, or an expert to teach them how to make resolution and keep it! They know their weaknesses and strength and utilize this info to become better human beings.
So flunk resolution making.
Forget your diet:
- Lets just say it: no matter how much we are advised to keep our diet and active life, we are not going to do it. It is just too hard. Everyone around us is eating, and cooking good food, so logically it make sense to want to eat and enjoy eating even more. So enjoy your food during short holiday season. If you care about your weight and health, you will go back on your diet eventually. So much pressure to stay away from food and delicious dessert is not stopping us from eating, it results in eating and feeling guilty afterwards. To me it is unnecessary mental stress.
Find joy in giving and be creative
How many holidays is it going to take from us to get people things they rarely use, specially when we are not close enough to share an advice or our opinion with them. We all observe people around us and see their “weaknesses”! How about we help them improve this year!? Clearly I am not suggesting we walk around and tell people what is it that they suck at, or how jerk they come across as! In my opinion it is ok to let people know how they can become a better person, basically I am suggesting giving advice as gift! instead of getting all kinds of gifts.
Here is some ideas to consider:
- Write a nice card with your advice on it,
- Give books/ audio books/website and program subscription as gift that help people improve and grow,
- Show some care and compassion to those who need it by writing a nice letter, or note,
- Create a “coupon booklet” and volunteer to help your loved one with dog or baby sitting so they can go on a date, offer to make time for them if they need it, teach your talent, take them out, etc
Forgo some traditions
- Have you thought how we are making richest reacher by keeping traditions that don’t necessarily make any differences in our lives! All the decorations, and holiday related expenses. It is ok to bring some changes to most traditional occasions. Spice up your holidays with some changes. Make sure to communicate the change before executing it If you have anyone that get stressed out by change. We do not have to adhere to all given traditions; pick and chose the ones that you care the most for and forgo the rest.
New year is not any different from the new year eve or any other day of the year. For those who care to start over and are determined to grow and improve, any day can be a new beginning and for those who do not care enough, New Year will not do anything.
- Instead of looking for a new beginning and motivations to move on and up, take some time and reflect on your past year.
- Remember most your stupid mistakes and try not to repeat them,
- Keep the joy of successes and try to create more of them,
And keep in mind as Seuss’s said:
“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
So be the “you” that your future-self will thank you! and don’t wait for any New Year to start that process.
Happy Holidays,
